Please read the passage and be prepared to discuss the topics.

Philippians 3:1-7

  • Paul warned the Philippians about those who would add to the gospel additional requirements for salvation.  Can you think of some modern parallels?  Both within evangelical christianity and without.

  • Why do you think this warning was so important to Paul?

  • Why is it so difficult for us to stop putting confidence in the value of our personal righteousness?

  • What are the benefits of a life that counts all personal righteousness as loss compared to what we have in Christ?

Paul's Prayer for the Philippians

Questions for discussion:
  1. Restate Paul's prayer for the Philippian church in your own words as if you were framing the prayer for a member of your church.
  2. Find another example in the Bible of one believer praying for another and briefly summarize the prayer.
  3. We talked about making choices that direct us towards what is "excellent" instead of just what is "good" or "acceptable."  Provide a few examples of how this works.
  4. We also talked about the pivotal truth that our spiritual progress is the result of God's gracious working in us ("the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ").  Find another passage of Scripture that speaks to our reliance on God for spiritual growth.
