Study Questions for Tuesday, January 30, 2018

For our small group study, please read Romans 6:12-19 and consider the following questions:

  1. Our text deals tangentially with the concept of mortifying (killing, putting to death) sin in our lives.  Find a passage on the process of putting sin to death.  Compare and contrast it to our text to help us understand how this is accomplished.
  2. We spoke about the existence of 2 realms (Under Law/Grace) as well as two masters (Slaves of Sin/Righteousness).  We also discussed that we are all citizens in one of these realms and serve one of these masters.  What is a deceptive tactic used by Satan against those "Under Law" and "Slaves of Sin"? And why is it so effective?
  3. What does Paul mean by "the standard of teaching to which you were committed" (6:17)?  How are we now obedient to it?
  4. What does the phrase "For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness..." (6:19) teach us about the nature of sin and its impact on those under its influence?

Romans 5:17-21

  • Verse 17 says that because of Adam's sin "death reigned through that one man." Give other Scriptural examples or statements about this teaching.
