Romans 14:5-8

If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord.

One of my best friends loves sweet cream ice cream with raspberries on top. He will order that combination every time he gets ice cream…seriously, every single time. I love to try something new. When I get ice cream, I like to try weird combinations of flavor and toppings. In fact, I typically ask the worker to just pick something for me. He thinks I am crazy; I think he is boring. Both of us, though, have found something which works for us.

Christians around the world have wildly divergent ideas about how to please God on a day-to-day basis. Now, some things are universal truths from Scripture. Every believer is called to fear God and honor the authorities. Every believer is ordered to be kind, loving, and forgiving. Each of us is ordered to share the gospel, but God doesn’t tell us how to dress. He does not say what to eat. Jesus never explained which type of music is the best. What this passage does say is that God knows the thoughts of your heart, He understands motives, and He can accept different ideas from different people as acceptable worship. If you prefer to dress in a relaxed manner for church because you are more focused when comfortable, then glorify God in that way. If you prefer to dress up for church to remind yourself that worship is serious, then glorify God in that way. If you think traditional, conservative, nuanced music glorifies God with its attention to detail, sing it heartily for His pleasure. If you think modern, upbeat, energetic music is a “new song” which delights God, then passionately offer it to Him with sincerity. God knows your heart. If you selfishly insist on doing things your way because you selfishly refuse to do anything else, God knows. However, if you happen to have a different idea than someone else, that is fine. Sincerely honor God with your idea.

On a day-to-day basis we make millions of decisions. Each one will be a bit different then the next guy. God knows your heart. If what you are doing does not violate Scriptural principles or ignore Biblical teaching in some way, then glorify God with your choice and lovingly allow others to do the same.

Romans 14:5-8  One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.  6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.  7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself.  8 If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.
