Romans 5:15-19

I have seen graphics, charts, analogies and illustrations to explain how far in debt the USA is. I believe it is something like 16 trillion dollars right now. I made no decisions to add to that. I did not get to spend any of that. Though the debt has grown in my lifetime, it was massive when I was born. Now, I am no economist, and I have no idea what the ultimate result of the USA’s indebtedness will be, but there is nothing I can do about it. Something must be done, but it is beyond me. I was born into it, but I do not have much hope

.In much the same way this juxtaposition of Jesus and Adam hammers home once more just how desperately we need Jesus. Adam sealed our fate with one decision. One moment, one decision, one mistake, and the future of the entire human race careened off the tracks. We were all dead in Adam at that moment. You can argue, reject, bemoan, or decry this teaching, but it does not change anything—because of Adam’s sin you were born indebted in a way that you could never overcome or repay. There is no amount of good work, clean living, or good intentions that will make a difference in your debt. It is like a child trying to pay off the US debt with a paper route. The debt is still piling up, and you are not making the tiniest dent.

The difference between these two situations, though, is there is not a lot of good news long term for the USA, but there is great news for you as a sinner. Jesus—with his perfect life and sacrificial death--did for your spiritual debt what no politician or economist can do for the USA’s fiscal debt. He claimed it, paid it, and is willing to forgive it.

Romans 5:15-19   But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.  16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification.  17 If, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.  18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.  19 For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.
