Slaves of Jesus

The Bible does not speak specifically about how to be a good employee.  The cultural situation of the New Testament did not include much of the employee/employer concept.  But the Bible does speak in several places about the relationship of a slave to his master (Ephesians 6:5-6, Colossians 3:22, 1 Timothy 6:1-3, Titus 2:9-10, 1 Peter 2:18).  We naturally recoil at the concept of being a slave--of belonging to someone else.  But we must remember that Scripture portrays us as the slaves of Christ (Romans 6:17-18, 1 Corinthians 7:22).  We belong to Jesus.  We are no longer our own.  The passages we will consider in this study have one common theme: we should serve every earthly master as if we were serving Jesus himself.  If we are to belong to Jesus as His slaves, then it only makes sense that we maintain a similar relationship with our employers.  Scripture teaches us how this relationship is supposed to function.  Read more ...

Do I Have to Go to Sleep?

I just finished reading a series of books by Stephenie Meyer called the Twilight Series.  I don't think it is in any way a spoiler to tell you that the book is about vampires.  Meyer's world of vampires does not conform to the original standard for vampires set by Bram Stoker's Dracula.  Instead of sleeping in coffins during the day and rising to wreak havoc at night, the vampires in this story never sleep.  In fact they show only a few signs of human weakness at all.  They don't breathe.  They have only one thirst, and it only has to be quenched occasionally.  They are ridiculously strong, unbelievably fast, abnormally intelligent, and virtually indestructible.  In short, they are awesome. Twilight-A lot of people are reading it…should I ? (and more importantly, should I let my teens?)

Part 1-Should I read "Twilight"?

The "Twilight" books (a four-part series by Stephenie Meyer ) and movies are a national phenomenon about which believers should probably have an opinion. To have any sort of reasonable conversation (and I hope it will be a conversation we need to get a few things in place. First, I have read all four books and watched the first movie. [I have read reviews of books before and thought, "I don't think that guy really read the book."]Second, if you are considering reading the books, I will be very vague and avoid plot spoilers. Third, I will consider the series from a Christian/moral perspective, a Christian/philosophical perspective, and a literary perspective. Ready...?Read more ...

Twilight-A lot of people are reading it…should I ? (and more importantly, should I let my teens?)

Part 2 Should I let my teens read Twilight?

We will start the second part of this discussion with the presupposition that there are certain things that I can/should read that my children shouldn't. Some people disagree and say, "If my kids can't read it, I probably shouldn't either." I disagree, respectfully.  So, with that premise firmly in place it is the duty of the believing adult to consider whether he should allow his children to read this series.Read more ...
